When I said writing allows me to explore both personal experiences and the out-of-reach, I meant it.

Writing has always been a deep dive for me. It pulls thoughts and feelings from their half-buried state deep within my psyche; putting pen to paper is an act of necromancy, of alchemy. Even–especially, maybe–when I am not aware of what is happening until after the words have come to life.

Some of you know that towards the end of writing A Land of Light and Shadow, I became aware that so many of the themes and events in this story came about because my brain was trying desperately to tell me something I had long forgotten.

Themes of forgotten magic, loss buried deep within the country’s past, and a young MC trying to understand what is happening to her were not merely the workings of an active imagination. I was trying to tell myself about a long buried trauma.
