“Life is far more confusing since I climbed over the orchard wall.”
-The Secret Heart of Maeve MacGowan
Hello friends! This isn’t my usual time for sending out a newsletter, but when my amazingly talented cover artist Dawn Davidson sent me the file I had to share it with you ASAP before I post it on Instagram.
Take an eyeful of this beauty, then keep scrolling to read the blurb-in-progress:
Gorgeous, right??! The font, the glowing apple (why is it glowing??), the starry background, Maeve’s silhouette, the Celtic knots–it’s amazing. Plus I guess I’m starting my own trend of blue books, and I’m not mad about it.
Current blurb:
Maeve MacGowan has always found solace in the sacred apple orchard she tends, perched at the edge of the village of Quinn. Though her foster mother, Finna, is a hard, unaffectionate woman, Maeve could not imagine living anywhere else.
But when she discovers a disease eating away at the orchard, the kindly village leader, known as the Patrician, assigns her the task of curing them. Maeve is eager to help until one chance encounter challenges everything she’s ever been told about who Quin’s true enemies are. As her world unravels and Maeve questions the people around her, she is driven to choices that make her conscience writhe with discomfort, fear, and confusion.
A story about first love, belonging, and magic, The Secret Heart of Maeve MacGowan is for anyone who loves Irish history and who has ever faced the consequences of seeking safety and belonging in anything–or anyone– whose promises come at a steep cost.

You can still see I’m trying to figure out how to add the ‘first love’ storyline to the blurb. It isn’t the main relationship, but it is important nonetheless. The main relationship Maeve is grappling with here is her relationship to those whose affection and approval she’s willing to do anything to gain–until she’s faced with some uncomfortable truths about herself and the systems she lives in.
I’ll share more about The Secret Heart of Maeve MacGowan next month. If you’d like more in the meantime, you can follow my Instagram account.
